Feel your tension slide away as you enjoy the slowly changing images of flowers and water, floating seahorses and pink flamingos against a waterfall. At FutureAge Care we use our Ambient DVDs also as a backdrop to many activities. They help to enhance the feeling of a safe, non-threatening environment as they relax people and provide them with gentle distraction and some enjoyment as we bring other residents to the room. The DVDs can help agitated residents and those prone to wandering to sit still while we prepare to start our programs. The images and colours can help to stimulate the mind ready for activity and the vibrant colours (such as from the Flowers of Provence below) energise the mind and enhance imagination and creativity for art, seated dance and conversation.

Other suggestions: Your clients can start their day watching the sun rise over the hills at a beautiful lagoon, then move to the beach and listen to the gentle waves of a clear sea as they splash over the smooth sand. End the day as the sun sets once more and the sparkling water laps softly, using Sunset Lake as a visual cue for end-of-day reminders for your residents. Three more tracks offer natural decoration and a freshwater aquarium. Enjoy the sounds of nature as a river tumbles along and an unusual waterfall drops over the hillside against a clear, blue sky, or turn your TV into an aquarium with shimmering fish darting through the plant life.

Our residents with dementia were calling out the names of the flowers that they recognised and we had such fun, with one lady calling the dog a "blue setter". It was interesting and very positive to observe just how many residents reconised some of the music and commented on activities such as the wall being built, planting bulbs and how the toddler was trying to walk on the grass.

The crossword at the end was a great finish and provided another cognitive group activity that framed the garden topics and themes. Minds were able to recall the information already watched and many enjoyed enhanced memory through recall with the crossword photograph clues. This resource can be used over and over and our residents watched it all morning and then asked for it to be kept playing during the lunch meals.

DVD Packs:

One of our most popular resources:Series 1 - Colours and Calm

A new concept in aged care, Sundown TV is our promotion of quality viewing DVD packs for late afternoon, Sundowning management and intervention. Sundowning is the experience of stress, anxiety and fearful thoughts that a person with dementia can sometimes live through as the natural daylight begins to dim in the afternoon. This, along with the cease of activities with staff and the wind down towards the evening meal/bed time can trigger worry for those who no longer remember where they live, or who believe that they need to find their way home to family or a remembered home address from their past.

Sundowning of more than one resident in the afternoon can complicate an already anxious climate, as several residents and small groups begin to wander, call out or busy themselves searching for a phone, transport, handbag and answers from those around them concerning a "bed for the night", taxi/bus or an evening meal. Sundowning is especially prevalent in dementia specific residential homes and secure units.

Management of a calm and reassuring environment is essential in the afternoon and a common contribution to the chaos and trauma of a Sundowner's experience can be environmental noise, hectic movement and mainstream television playing loud, repetitive adverts, fast-paced children's programs and sudden bursts of newsbreaks. The noise and busyness can lead to sensory overload in a person with dementia, agitation or aggressive outburst (catastrophic event). It can also lead to attempts to abscond and therefore poses a greater risk of falls.

The Sundown TV range provides care staff with DVD resources that focus on a selection of short films, relaxing music, ambient sounds, nature and colour, to provide distraction and re-focus onto a healthy viewing and listening activity. Our first series, described as Colours & Calm consists of the Ambient Relaxation DVD: 9 varied viewing tracks with relaxing music and ambient sound options; the Butterflies & Flowers DVD: short, colourful films, study of insects and vibrant flowers, plus additional tracks of slowly changing images with sounds of nature. The 3rd DVD: Moments in Lavender is an engaging viewing activity with 2 films that promote reminiscing, implicit memory, colour focus and themes and there is also a short word changing activity.

$89.95 ($5.90 discount on rrp) this DVD pack comes with laminated A4 cards for additional suggestions, plus a sturdy plastic folder to keep your resources safe and easily accessible for those times of need. These DVDs can also be used for viewing anytime and as healthy backdrops for a positive room enhancement and wellbeing environment. View samples from each individual DVD towards the top of this webpage.

CDs - Exercise & Relaxation/Special Therapeutic:

Healing Sound Bath Audio CD - Healing Sound Bath with Tuning Forks F, C and G

The Healing Sound Bath is a calming, soothing and relaxing experience, which can help the listener to feel rested, rejuvenated and cleansed in mind, body and spirit.

Allow tension to be washed away and mental chatter to soften as gentle vocal tones, guitar, wind chimes and flute melodies weave together with the sound of tuning forks. Let your heart be light and your mind be free from worry as you relax and enjoy this healing sound bath.

Sound healing works through the principle of resonance. As the sound vibrations 'resonate' within you they may help to release feelings and emotions during and/or after the sound bath - know that this is part of a healing process and that it will pass. The CD comes with easy to follow guidelines to ensure the listener’s comfort and safety.

Emma Burke is a registered Sound Therapy Practitioner and together with her we have created this Healing Sound Bath CD. We use this professional and holistic resource with a selection of clients with a multiple disability diagnosis including Traumatic Brain Injury and with clients living with dementia. The Healing Sound Bath can be an effective tool for pain management, relaxation programs and to help alleviate depression. We are using this CD with 2 clients who have experienced sensory deprivation and it is an effective tool to help rebuild and strengthen the brain's ability to cope with and enjoy increased audio sensory input once more. $32:00

It literally is like working with a pen - this beautifully crafted massaging pen from Germany is ideal for sensory touch programs with clients who may benefit from the sensation of the smooth Rose Quartz gemstone rolling gently on their body. This pen is a unique tool that engages in therapeutic touch experiences between you and your client.

The diagram shows how the timber JOYA™ pens can be used on various parts of the body, including frail areas such as hands with arthritis and frail shoulders (check with client/health considerations first). This small massager pen can provide gentle and soothing relief from aches and pains with the freely rotating gemstone that is set into the top of the pen. The freely rotating crystal can be rolled with the pen onto direct skin or on top of clothing: the second option of which is ideal for those with very fragile skin.

The crystal gemstone feels cool to the skin and you can also gently heat it in warm water for warmth to the skin in the cooler months.

JOYA™ have created the Professional Massager Pen, which is made of white composite mineral, which is safe to clean thoroughly and sterilise. This is the same substance that is used for commercial and industrial bench tops and hospital grade areas that require thorough sterilisation. We have been using the professional pen with the rose quartz crystal with a client with Binswangers Dementia and she has enjoyed a lifestyle of beauty pampering and massage for many years. We also use the pens with younger clients with a brain injury and multiple disability diagnosis, as well as the frail elderly. Of course, the pen can also be used with staff!

We stock the JOYA™ Professional Pen and the cheaper Timber Pen - each comes with the Rose Quartz Gemstone.

Your Kit is accompanied by a booklet on using the pen and a tote bag to keep the pen stored, plus a complementary relaxing CD called Soothing Rockpool. We have also included some additional information to help you get started with your client or residents.

Important information: for use with clients where the pen needs to be thoroughly sterilised after each use and/or if using with aromatherapy oil for eg - we recommend the Professional Pen (white). For clients where you are not using with oils and are using over their clothes, or where thorough sterilisation is not essential - we recommend the Timber Pen (brown) which can still be cleaned.

Testimonials: "I use the Joya Pens every week with my clients. I work with clients with traumatic brain injury, multiple disabilities and also the elderly, including those with dementia. The Joya pen is good for hands with stiff joints, spasticity and arthritis because it is gentle and I can control the amount of pressure I use. For clients who experience stiff neck and shoulders from wheelchair restriction and physical impairments, the Joya pen is a real treat and it’s very soothing and relaxing.

Some of my clients are “handled” physically for showering and toilet assistance every day and the Joya experience brings back some nurturing touch and tender sensory encounters. Before music activities, I use the Joya pen to help open up the palms of the hand so that a client can hold an instrument and participate. One client is really surprised that she can open her hand and hold things!

If there are cross contamination concerns I use the Joya Professional Pen, because it can be sterilised thoroughly. I keep a Joya pen with me everywhere I go and the value it brings to my therapies with clients is so real and is genuinely a great experience!" - Jennifer Freeman – Diversional Therapist, FutureAge Care.

The JOYA™ Professional Pen Kit is $125 and the Timber Pen Kit is only $65.

Similar to College and other learning style courses, Pathfinder presents a series of purposeful and structured activities to enhance physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

Our aim is to take your residents on a stimulating journey through a series of 8-10 activity course sessions, with a graduation and certificates of participation at the end of your course, during the final session. Activities can then be continued and developed into ongoing programs or the course can begin again with new participants.

Pathfinder Courses are designed for aged care and dementia specific environments, with groups of up to 12 residents, plus your nominated staff facilitator (and 2nd support person where possible). Each course consists of 8-10 sessions of achievable activities to enhance cognition, physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing, creative energy and opportunities for self-expression among residents. The course creators are experienced in running these programs with clients themselves - so you can be guaranteed that the activities and techniques are suitable for the aged care environment and for facilitating with residents with dementia.

Pathfinder Courses come complete with everything you need to lead each session: A Facilitator’s Manual, Course Certificates, a Documenting Journal, DVD and CD (resources may vary with each course). Drama for Seniors

Drama for Seniors & Special Needs Groups by Marilyn Snow - An exciting and must-have approach to running a drama group for older people and those living with disabilities. It’s easy to do and the results are remarkable as happiness, motivation, rejuvenation and the return to ‘being in control’ become a reality, as lives are enriched and have a sense of purpose, through the joy of drama.

This resource, which describes and is based on the true success story of a group living in residential care, explains how to include people who suffer with dementia, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, impaired vision and mobility, cancer, low self esteem and other challenges in a low cost, special needs drama group. There are hints on how to include almost everyone, a guide to stage design and costumes, songs (new words to old tunes), instructions on puppet and puppet theatre making, photographs and diagrams to assist understanding, and a wealth of other information.

It contains scripts for four funny and highly successful comedies written by the author (photocopiable for cast members). The book will appeal to diversional therapists, activity and recreational professionals and carers, those with disabilities, and any mature, or younger people interested in forming a special needs drama group. Drama for Seniors & Special Needs Groups: Setting up a drama group plus four plays: $40.00

Story of the Titanic

Story Of The Titanic, by Lauretta Kaldor is a very large print reading resource that is invaluable to your programs with clients with dementia.

It is particularly important to provide appropriate leisure activities for clients with dementia. Reading for pleasure is something most of us enjoy and the retained ability to read is often overlooked by carers of clients with cognitive loss. Despite such cognitive loss, many of our clients can still enjoy reading. It is demeaning for the clients and their carers to offer childish books to adults.

This series of readers provides adult material in very large print on topics of interest for reading, enjoyment and discussion.

FutureAge Care promotes reading as an essential activity within the aged care environment. Our research into reading with clients - even those with advanced dementia has shown that many can and still enjoy reading words, sentences and information as part of their daily life activities. These books are lightweight and easy to hold. Each book is enhanced with original coloured illustrations. (It may be necessary to have a few copies of each book so that each person is accommodated.)

Only $25.00 per copy - Bulk orders of the books can be purchased at a discount.

The Beekeeper Who Climbed A Mountain - The story of Sir Edmund Hillary

The second in a series of reading books for people with dementia by Lauretta Kaldor. $25

"A 21st Century Reader for 20th Century Readers"...

We use these readers with our clients with dementia and we have been delighted to observe just how well a person with dementia can read when given just the right amount of large-print words and easy layout to view on each page. With simple pictures to help bring the books alive, there are also conversation ideas and questions at the end of the book that the carer or reading club facilitator can use to promote continued discussion and reinforce the story for memory and concentration.
